In October 2012, a family member of mine was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous (or myeloid) Leukemia (CML). Needless to say it was an extremely emotional time for my family. Two-weeks after my family member was diagnosed I discovered The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and their upcoming fundraising event, Light The Night Walk. I was so excited to find something positive to rally behind and feel like I could make a tangible difference. I created a Walk team, The Underwater Ocelot Ninjas From Outerspace, and invited our closest family members to join and help raise funds. Have a look at our donation page copy:

Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s annual fundraising walk where friends and family join forces and say, “F-You Cancer Scum!”

The UONFO Team was formed when we discovered our superstar family member, Robert Mills, had unknowingly and unwillingly acquired a dark passenger named CML. Our troops quickly rallied to Robert’s side in support and ready to send CML back to the fiery depths of hell from whence it came.

We’re currently seeking UONFO Citizen Fighters to help bring down CML. We must warn you, CML is a shifty character who knows no boundaries. If you’re brave enough to join this epic battle, we welcome and salute your efforts, and invite you to click the ‘Donate’ button to the right of your screen.

Within one week we raised $4,545.00! I couldn’t believe how much support we had behind us. It was truly incredible to see the donations pour in hour after hour. Our family even created team jerseys and ninja headbands for the Walk. The event was truly a great way to bring our family together in a positive way after such a devastating diagnosis. We will definitely be participating in next year’s Walk. Our goal is $15k.
